Scope and Content

The Perry Autograph Collection, 1781-1952, consists of 67 letters and documents signed by Civil War military figures and other notable American political, literary, and military figures.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of the American Civil War. The majority of these items relate to military figures of that war and date from 1862 to 1870. Among the letters are 24 addressed to General William T. Sherman. Of special interest are six Abraham Lincoln items, including three holograph letters. Also represented here are Henry Ward Beecher, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edward Everett, William Pitt Fessenden, Nathanael Greene, Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894), Washington Irving, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, Robert Morris (1734-1806), William Hickling Prescott, Daniel Webster, and John Greenleaf Whittier.
