Abstract: Adelaide Rudolph (1858-1953) was a niece of President and Mrs. James A. Garfield who was a teacher and librarian at Columbia University. After her retirement, she worked on a history of Hiram, Ohio, at the Cleveland Public Library. Her father, Joseph Rudolph, was a soldier in Company A, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War. The collection consists of letters, a journal, genealogical data, and newspaper clippings of the Garfield and Rudolph families.

Scope and Content

The Adelaide Rudolph Papers, 1839-1951 and undated, consist of letters, a journal, genealogical data, and newspaper clippings of the Garfield and Rudolph families.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the life and activities of the James A. Garfield family, particularly that of Adelaide Rudolph. The collection includes correspondence from Abram Garfield, Harry A. Garfield, Irvin Garfield, James R. Garfield, and Mary Garfield. Also included are several letters from Joseph Rudolph, father of Adelaide Rudolph, while serving with Company A. 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War. The collection also contains a diary of Adelaide Rudolph, genealogical data, and newspaper clippings.
