Finding aid for the United States War Department Intelligence Reports

Scope and Content

The United States War Department Intelligence Reports, 1917-1921, consist of eighteen volumes of weekly war intelligence reports. The first eight volumes (numbered I-VIII) were prepared by Captain William K. Wallace, between June 2, 1917 and October 5, 1918, and have a spine title: "Weekly Intelligence Summaries." The next ten volumes (numbered VI-XV) were prepared by the Military Intelligence Division, General Staff, War Department, between October 12, 1918 and February 26, 1921, and have a spine title: "The European War."

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of World War I and the progress reports filed by the Untied States War Department for the information of the Secretary of War, and Chief of Staff. Newton D. Baker, of Cleveland, Ohio, was the Secretary of War during World War I. According to the foreword in the first volume, "The chief sources of information are the Commander-in-Chief, American Expeditionary Forces, our Military Attaches, Liaison Officers with Foreign Armies, State and Navy Department, Allied Governments, Persons on Special Mission, and Confidential Agents."
