Abstract: The Book and Thimble Club was a women's club whose members were primarily concerned with literary pursuits but occasionally engaged in civic and charitable activities. It was organized in 1890, in Cleveland, Ohio, and became inactive after 1957. The collection consists of correspondence, constitution, by-laws, secretaries' and treasurers' books, attendance book, histories of the club, programs, leaflets, newspaper clippings, and other papers, relating to the activities of the club.

Scope and Content

The Book and Thimble Club Records, 1890-1957 and undated, consist of correspondence, constitution, by-laws, secretaries' and treasurers' books, attendance book, histories of the club, programs, leaflets, newspaper clippings, and other papers, relating to the activities of the club.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of Cleveland, Ohio, and women's history there in the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. Those studying the history of philanthropy and charity in Cleveland will also find this collection useful. The club members, limited to twenty-five, were primarily concerned with literary pursuits, but did occasionally engage in civic and charitable activities. The club was instrumental in organizing the Consumers League of Ohio in 1900. The collection includes brief histories of the club prepared by Mrs. D. H. Maloney in 1937, Miss Milly E. Brown in 1940, Mrs. Seth hayes in 1942, and Mrs. Charles B. Ewing in 1954. It also includes several letters addressed to the club from Mrs. D. H. Maloney, who was living in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1938-1939; and from Mrs. Louise (Maloney) Bruin, 1945-1956. The latter series contains Mrs. Bruin's comments on life in in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation of World War II.
