Abstract: Charles W. White (1897-1970) was a Cleveland, Ohio, attorney who became Assistant Law Director for Cleveland (1933-1955) and Common Pleas Court judge (1955-1970). He was active in African American rights organizations and civic affairs. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, awards, certificates, legal files, scrapbooks, and other papers, relating to the public and personal life of Judge White and to his activities as a member of the Urban League, NAACP, ACLU, Consumers League, East End Community Center, Karamu House, and Friends of the Cleveland Public Library.

Biography of Charles W. White

The Charles W. White Family was prominent in Cleveland, Ohio, from the 1940s through the 1970s. Charles W. White (1897-1970) was a lawyer and judge active in the African American civil rights movement, African American organizations, and civic affairs. His wife Stella G. White (1907-1991), also active in African American rights and civic affairs, served on numerous boards, including the Cleveland Transit System, and worked as a freelance journalist for area newspapers, particularly the Plain Dealer. White had one daughter, Lillian, from a previous marriage.

Scope and Content

The Charles W. White Papers, 1920-1970, consist of correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, awards, certificates, legal files, scrapbooks, and other papers, relating to the public and personal life of Judge White and to his activities as a member of the Urban League, NAACP, ACLU, Consumers League, East End Community Center, Karamu House, and Friends of the Cleveland Public Library.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of Cleveland , Ohio, and the African American community there in the twentieth century. Those studying the life, career, and activities of Charels W. White will find this collection particularly useful.
