History of the Novel Club of Cleveland

The Novel Club of Cleveland was founded by Elizabeth Cutter (later Mrs. Dwight Morrow) and a small group of friends on December 5, 1896 in Cleveland, Ohio. They agreed to have monthly meetings to study and discuss novels. At each meeting, one member presented a biography of the author of the day, and another read a critical study of the novel itself. The entire membership then participated in a discussion in response to questions prepared by the critic. Novels were chosen annual by the membership from a select list.
