The Cleveland Printing and Graphic Communications Union, Local No. 56 was chartered in 1891 as the Cleveland Printing and
Pressmen's Union, Local No. 56. It became the Cleveland Printing Pressmen's and Assistants Union, Local No. 56 in 1929, after
merging with the Cleveland Pressmen's Assistants Union, Local No. 45. The present name was adopted after a 1973 merger with
the Stereotypers and Electrotypers International. Activities of the union have included support of other unions, establishment
of a technical school and a tuberculosis sanitarium in Tennessee, and support of the Cleveland Citizen, one of America's oldest
labor newspapers. The collection consists of minutes, ledgers, cash and dues books, payment records, tax information, attendance
books, subject files, and newsletters.
