Biography of Joseph L. and Edith L. Weinberg

Joseph Lewis Weinberg (1890-1977) was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio architect. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Lewis and Mollie Weinberg. Following his father's death, Joseph and his two sisters were sent to Cleveland to live in the Jewish Orphan Home. The family was later reunited in Cleveland. After graduating from Harvard in 1912, Weinberg worked for different architects, served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War I, and then opened his own architectural practice in Cleveland in 1919. Weinberg practiced in a number of partnerships until his death in 1977, much of the time in association with Wallace G. Teare. Buildings designed by Weinberg include the Bellefaire Jewish Orphan Home, Lakeview Terrace public housing project, Council Gardens housing for the elderly, O'Neil-Sheffield Shopping Center in Lorain, and Chesterfield Apartments, among numerous other apartment buildings and commercial structures. Weinberg also taught architecture and was active in professional associations and in the Cleveland Jewish community.

Edith Lazarus Weinberg (1902-1987) has been an active volunteer in many community organizations. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Edward and Stella Lazarus. From 1926 to 1933 she worked at the Young Men and Women's Hebrew Association in Pittsburgh, first as Director of Women's Physical Education, then as Director of Women's Activities. Since her marriage to Joseph L. Weinberg in 1933, Edith's involvement in Cleveland community organizations has included serving as president of the Federation of Jewish Women's Organizations during World War II, chairman of the Junior Volunteer Committee of the Central Volunteer Bureau of the Welfare Federation of Cleveland, civil defense chairman for the Federation of Jewish Women's Organizations, and chairman of the Jewish Community Center Teen Advisory Committee.
