Abstract: | Leonard Levy was a Cleveland, Ohio, attorney who became assistant police prosecutor (1922-1923) and city treasurer (1936-1966). He also served as foreman of the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury. He wrote numerous speeches and articles for the mayors under whom he served, as well as scripts for several radio programs such as "Safety First," "Your Town," and "You and Your Government." The collection consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, minutes, publications, scripts, and speeches. |

Leonard Levy (1895-1985) was born in Cleveland. After graduating from Harvard College in 1916, Levy joined the United States Army and served as an aerial bombing instructor in France during World War I. After the war, Levy returned to Harvard where he studied law. He received his law degree in 1920 and entered private practice. From 1922 to 1923, Levy worked as an assistant police prosecutor in Cleveland. In 1936, Levy was appointed city treasurer by Mayor Harold Burton, a post which he held until his retirement in 1966. Along with balancing the city books, Levy also wrote numerous speeches and articles for the mayors under which he served. Levy remained active during his retirement. In 1973, Levy served as foreman of the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury. He was a board member or trustee of the Bureau of Jewish Education, Jewish Big Brothers Association, the Institute of Jewish Studies and the Jewish Community Council. In 1983, Levy moved to Chicago, where he died in May of 1985.
The Leonard Levy Papers, 1936-1965, consist of clippings, correspondence, minutes, publications, scripts and speeches. The first series consists primarily of articles and speeches written by Levy for Mayors Thomas A. Burke, Anthony J. Celebrezze and Ralph Locher. The second series contains scripts written by Levy for several radio programs, such as "Safety First," "Your Town" and "You And Your Government." The third series contains miscellaneous topics of local interest.
The collection pertains largely to topics of local interest, such as the city charter, fluoridation, garbage disposal, highway construction, juvenile delinquency, public housing, public transportation, rent control, taxes and traffic.
