Biography of Stella G. White

Stella G. White (1907-1991) was a freelance journalist and community leader in mass transit in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the wife of Judge Charles W. White. Born in Charlotte Court House, Virginia, she was raised in New York City. She taught elementary school, worked with delinquent boys, and served in the United States Women's Army Corps, being commissioned First Lieutenant in 1943. After her marriage and her move to Cleveland, White increasingly involved herself in community service and the promotion of interracial understanding. She served on the Community Relations Board (Housing Committee), Women's Committee of United Negro College Fund, Urban Renewal Advisory Committee, and Council on Human Relations. She was appointed to the Board of Ethics in the 1960s, then to the Board of the Cleveland Transit System in 1970. During this time she also wrote columns regularly for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. After an active public life in Cleveland, she moved to New York City in the late 1970s.
