Zerah Coston Monks (1841-?) was the son of Reverend and Mrs. William Monks of Curllsville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. In 1859 he moved to Ohio to attend school in Twinsburg, where his father was working as a Methodist Episcopal minister. Less than a year later, he returned to Curllsville to be near his older brother Thomas and teach in nearby Churchville. During these years, he corresponded frequently with Hannah Rohrer of Stewart-s Run, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Hannah Rohrer (1842-?) was the third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Rohrer and, at the time of the correspondence, was keeping house for her maternal grandparents. Hannah maintained her correspondence with Coston from his 1862 enlistment in a Union regiment until their marriage in September 1865 in Vineland, New Jersey. One year later, Hannah and Coston moved to Vineland where their son Willie was born.
The Zerah Coston Monks Family Papers, 1859-1886 and undated, consist of correspondence, a Civil War diary, biographical sketches and poetry concerning the Monks, Rohrer, and Conpropst families.
The material in this collection pertains primarily to the lives and relationships between members of the Monks, Rohrer, and Conpropst families during the American Civil War. The correspondence relates to their education, work, and social activities on the home front as well as with the male cousins active service in the Civil War. Andrew Jackson Monks' Civil War diary briefly details his experience as Ordinance Sergeant of the 105th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, in 1863.
