History of the National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees (U.S.)., Local 604, Ladies Auxiliary

The National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees, Local 604, Ladies Auxiliary (f. 1927) is an auxiliary unit of the NAPFE in Cleveland, Ohio. The Ladies Auxiliary began as a temporary organization at the founding of the NAPFE in 1913 and was officially organized as a national body at the New Orleans Convention in 1921. The Cleveland branch was founded in 1927 and functions for the benefit of its members and to aid and assist the work of the NAPFE.

The National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees, Local 604 (f. 1927) is a predominantly African American, independent, industrial union of federal employees in Cleveland, Ohio. The National Alliance of Postal Employees was founded in 1913 as a response to a mass firing of African American railway clerks and the refusal of the Federation of Postal Clerks to support them. Initially only open to railway clerks, the N.A.P.E. opened membership to all postal employees in 1923 and to all federal employees in 1963 when it adopted its present name. Cleveland Local 604 was founded with former national president Alonzo L. Glenn as its first president. The union has fought against discrimination in hiring and promotion, segregated unions and facilities, and for women's equality. Local 604 is presently (1987) located at 8913 Cedar Avenue in Cleveland.


Scope and Content

The National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees, Local 604, Ladies Auxiliary Records 1953-1977 consist of a constitution of District 6, convention reports, minutes, correspondence, membership cards, programs, and publications.

This collection pertains to the work of the local and the auxiliary from the 1950s to the 1970s. Information relating to racial discrimination in the federal government and in the labor movement is included.
