Abstract: Katherine P. Williamson (1910-1964) was a Cleveland, Ohio, social worker who had a particular interest in improved housing for minority groups. She was a caseworker for the Cuyahoga County Child Welfare Dept., Family Life Coordinator for the Welfare Federation of Cleveland's Central Area Community Council, and Child Welfare Consultant, and later, Northeast Area Superior, for the Ohio Dept. of Public Welfare. The collection consists of biographical materials, clippings, correspondence, and subject files relating to her career as well as to her organizational activities.

Biography of Katherine P. Williamson

Katherine P. Williamson (1910-1964) was a social worker in Cleveland, Ohio, with an interest in improved housing for minority groups. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, she received her A. B. degree from Oberlin College in 1929 and her Master of Science in Social Administration from Western Reserve University in 1932. In 1934 she married Harvey M. Williamson in Erie, Pennsylvania, and concluded three years as a caseworker for the Cleveland Humane Society. For the next eleven years she served as a casework supervisor for the Cuyahoga County Child Welfare Board. In 1945 she began her tenure with the Welfare Federation of Cleveland, serving as the Family Life Coordinator assigned to the Central Areas Community Council for a special demonstration program in family life education from 1955-1958. In May 1958, she addressed the second Biennial All Day Women's Convention of the Women's League in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Five months later she was hired as a Child Welfare Consultant for the Division of Social Administration for the Ohio Department of Public Welfare. She was promoted to Northeast Area Supervisor in 1961. Three years later she was named Social Worker of the Year by the Cleveland Area chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. In addition to her career, Williamson was an active member of the Mount Zion Congregational Church, executive committee of the General Council of Congregational Christian Churches, and Phillis Wheatley Association. She was a member of the board of trustees of the Consumers League of Ohio, Better Homes and Neighborhoods Association, and the Advisory Committee of the Cleveland City Planning Commission.

The Katharine P. Williamson Papers, Series II, 1927-1969 and undated, consist of biographical materials, clippings, correspondence, and subject files relating to of her career as well as to her organizational activities.

This collection pertains primarily to Williamson's career and organizational activities within Cleveland's African American community. Those studying the history of Cleveland, Ohio, women's history, and the history of the African American community in Cleveland will find this collection useful.
