Abstract: John Whittlesey Walton (1845-1926) was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and philanthropist, Walton started a ship chandlery business and co-founded the Upson-Walton Company in 1893. In 1867, Walton was one of the men responsible for the revival of the YMCA in Cleveland. From 1874-1926, Walton was actively involved in charity, serving during this period as treasurer of the Bethel Associated Charities. Throughout his life, Walton was keenly interested in the field of sociology and in the emerging scientific approach to social work. His daughter, Gladys Walton was involved in numerous dramatic and musical events. The collection consists of a diary of a trip by John Whittlesey Walton to the West Indies in 1895, a map charting the West Indies trip, a collection of his writings (consisting of religious hymns, poetry, and articles), correspondence, his scrapbooks, scrapbooks of Gladys Walton, and newspaper clippings.

Biography of the John Whittlesey Walton Family

The John Whittlesey Walton Family was active in Cleveland, Ohio, at the turn of the 20th century. John Whittlesey Walton (1845-1926), born in Connecticut, moved to Cleveland with his family at an early age. He was a businessman and a philanthropist who helped establish the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). (For a more complete biography refer to the finding aid to MS 3933 John Whittlesey Walton Papers). John Walton married La Mira Augusta Lyman in 1869. She died after giving birth to their third child. He then married Gertrude Louise Hutchinson in 1885. They also had three children, one of whom, Gladys Walton (1892- ?), graduated from Hathaway Brown School. She played the organ and participated in and attended dramas and musical events.

Scope and Content

The John Whittlesey Walton Family Papers, 1842-1926 and undated, consist of a diary of a trip by Walton to the West Indies in 1895, a map charting the West Indies trip, a collection of his writings (consisting of religious hymns, poetry, and articles), correspondence, his scrapbooks, scrapbooks of Gladys Walton, and newspaper clippings.

This collection pertains largely to John Whittlesey Walton and touches upon his family. The West Indies diary is a complete account, country by country, of his trip in 1895. Numerous written works of John Whittlesey Walton are part of this collection. Two scrapbooks of Gladys Walton pertain to musical events, plays and dramas, World War I, and personal activities.
