History of the Walnut School Association

The Walnut School Association (f. 1905) was an alumni association organized by former scholars and teachers of the Walnut Street School in Newburgh Township, Ohio, to perpetuate the memory of the institution. The school had been built in 1856 but was torn down thirty-five years later to accommodate a residential district. The pupils were transferred to the new Miles Park School nearby. Association reunions were held almost annually from 1905 through 1954, drawing as many as 1200 attendees in 1908 and as few as 35 in 1916. They were funded through voluntary contributions of the membership and often featured programs of reminiscences, formal addresses, songs, and historical sketches. The association disbanded in 1954 because so few of the alumni remained.
