Biography of Frank Lyons

Frank Lyons (1894-1974) was a lawyer and civic leader in the Cleveland, Ohio, African American community. Born in Middleboro, Kentucky, Lyons and his parents moved to Cleveland in 1895. After graduation from East Technical High School in 1915 and one year's study of business administration at the Cleveland Central Institute, Lyons took over his father's ice business, selling it to the Young Ice and Coal Company in 1920. Lyons then worked at several managerial positions while attending Baldwin Wallace Law School. After his graduation in 1922, he opened his own practice, dealing primarily in civil law. Over the next several decades, Lyons became involved in Republican politics, running unsuccessfully for state senator twice and state representative once. He was also active in community service, founding the Cleveland Business League (formerly the Negro Progressive Business Alliance) and serving on such boards as the Urban League, St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, and Woodland Center Neighborhood House.
