History of the Ohio Trappers Association

The Ohio Trappers Association (f. 1940) was organized to preserve trapping, promote the fur industry in Ohio, and conserve the state's natural fur resources. Directors were appointed for the purpose of leading association activities within various regions of the state, and monitoring local fur conditions for trapping, conservation, and marketing. One of the primary goals of the association was to educate the public on methods used in trapping. This was especially encouraged during the 1970s when campaigns to ban trapping were taken to the state legislature by anti-trapping groups such as the Ohio Committee for Humane Trapping. It was during this decade that the association temporarily changed its name to "Ohio Fur Harvesters, Inc." to ameliorate their image among non-trappers. The Ohio Trappers Association is still active today, holding periodic conferences for their membership.
