Biography of Lana Moresky

Lana Moresky (born 1946), a women's rights activist, was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and raised in Sharon, Pennsylvania, by Reform Jewish parents. Moresky (nee Zatell) received her Bachelor's degree in elementary education from Pennsylvania State University in 1967, just prior to her marriage to Marc Moresky, a Pennsylvania native. In 1970 she joined a Pittsburgh area chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW), the largest women's rights organization in the United States. Prior to the family's 1972 move to Cleveland, Ohio, Moresky served as a board member and an officer of the South Hills (Pittsburgh) area NOW and co-founded the South Hills NOW Day Nursery School, the first of its kind in the country.

In Cleveland, Moresky involved herself in the local chapter of NOW. Initial chapter organization attempts had faltered in 1968 when local leaders established the Women's Equity Action League as an alternative to NOW, but a downtown chapter of NOW had been re-established in 1970. Spearheading the multiple chapter approach, Moresky expanded the Cleveland area to seven chapters over the 1970s while, as education chair, also developing a slide program on sexism in primary readers. By 1973 she was a member of the executive board and a state delegate. A year later, she became state coordinator, doubling the number of chapters in Ohio in addition to establishing the Ohio NOW Education Task Force. In 1976 she was elected to a hotly-contested seat on the national board of NOW.

Moresky's involvement in NOW, particularly at the local level, continued into the 1980s even as her political and women's rights activities diversified and increased. These included the following memberships: Ohio Attorney General's Equal Rights Amendment Task Force on Sexism in Education, 1974-1975; Ohio Democratic Party Convention Delegate, 1976 and 1978: Cuyahoga County Democratic Executive Committee, 1976-1980; Ohio International Women's Year Coordinating Committee, 1977; Cuyahoga County Steering Committee for the White House Conference on Families, 1979; Twenty-second District Caucus, chairperson, 1980; Democratic National Convention delegate, 1980 and 1984; American for Democratic Action, Cleveland Board of Directors, 1982, and national board of directors from 1984; National Council of Jewish Women, 1982; and Coalition of Labor Union Women, 1982.

Scope and Content

The Lana Moresky Papers, 1952-1988 and undated, consist of biographical materials, calendars, and speeches, as well as files on the National Organization for Women and NOW's Majority Caucus and subject files which focus on feminism, women's issues, events, and women's organizations.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of Cleveland, Ohio, and women's history there in the second half of the twentieth century. The collection pertains largely to the development of feminism as a social movement in the 1970s and 1980s, to the National Organization for Women as a feminist organization with grassroots chapters, and to prevalent late-twentieth century women's issues such as abortion, child care, education, employment, the Equal Rights Amendment, International Women's Year, media, and politics and legislation. Those studying the history and activities of the National Organization for Women in Cleveland, Ohio, and its Eastern Suburbs, and particularly the role played by Lana Moresky in the development of these chapters will find this collection valuable. Those studying the role of women in Democratic Party politics, particularly the activities of Lana Moresky, will find this collection useful.
