Abstract: Leon A. Kujawski (b. 1883) was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer, politician, and judge of Polish birth. Kujawski began practicing law in 1913, specializing in labor law, became a municipal court judge in 1933, then served two terms as a city councilman representing the Tremont area of Cleveland. He served on the state liquor control board, 1938-1939. The collection consists of a biography, correspondence, an affidavit, miscellaneous campaign material, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks. The collection contains information about Kujawski's terms as city councilman, especially his fight to lower bus fares, and his activities on the Liquor Control Board.

Biography of Leon A. Kujawski

Leon A. Kujawski (1883- ? ) was a lawyer, politician, and judge. Born in Posen, Poland, he immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, with his family when he was three years old. He taught in Polish parochial schools while attending Cleveland Law School at night. Graduating and passing the bar in 1913, he began practicing law with a specialization in labor law. He won an unexpired term as a municipal judge in 1933, then served two terms as a Cleveland city councilman representing Tremont and the Near West Side. In 1938 he was appointed to the state liquor control board, but resigned in 1939. He was active in many Polish social organizations, including the Polish Singing Alliance. He resided at 3137 West 14th Street.

The Leon A. Kujawski Papers, 1931-1943 and undated, consist of a biography, correspondence, an affidavit, miscellaneous campaign material, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks. Some materials are in Polish.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of Cleveland, Ohio, particularly political and legal history in the 1930s and 1940s.
