History of the Autograph/Photograph Album

The Autograph/Photograph Album was a keepsake of autographs and photographs to Kittie (or Katie) from school friends at both the Hartford Female Seminary of Hartford, Connecticut, and the Abbot Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, just prior to the American Civil War.

Scope and Content

The Autograph/Photo Album, l857-l861, consists of class photographs and sentimental autographs written by school friends, both male and female, probably upon their graduation. It includes a poem and autograph by Augusta Rhodes.

This collection pertains primarily to the custom of collecting autographs and photographs from school friends upon graduation from an institution. This custom seems to have been particularly relevant to women in the nineteenth century.
