Biography of Irene Pennington Miller

Irene Pennington Miller (1885-1968), of Cleveland, Ohio, was a well-educated woman who did not marry until late in life, probably due to a devotion to career. The recorded history of her family began when Daniel Pennington and Elizabeth Michner, both Quakers, married in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in 1720. They were the great-great-great grandparents of Irene Pennington. Irene herself had a baccalaureate from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, and a bachelor's degree in library science from Western Reserve University in Cleveland. The diploma from the latter degree indicated that she had previously received an M.A. but it does not indicate when or where. She was also active in a few hereditary societies, such as the National Society of New England Women and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. She did not marry until age 60. After the death of her first husband, Harold Cushing Schofield, she remarried to Abram Brown Miller, who also predeceased her.

Scope and Content

The Irene Pennington Miller Family Papers, 1621 and 1899-1945, consist of a lease for Heneage House in England to Isaac Pennington (relationship, if any, unknown), a marriage announcement for Irene Pennington and Harold Cushing Schofield, a brief genealogy of the Pennington and Linvill (maiden name of Irene Pennington's paternal grandmother) families, and Irene's certificates and diplomas. The Heneage House lease is dated 1621. The house itself was where the Pilgrims met before sailing to Plymouth in 1620.

This collection's greatest value is to genealogists interested in the Pennington family and the activities of Irene Pennington Miller herself. It includes no data on either of her husbands except for the announcement of her first marriage. Researchers interested in women's history in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Western Reserve will find this collection useful.
