Abstract: |
Charles Roscoe Howland was a brigadier general in the United States Army who served in the Philippines in 1899, had command
of the U.S. Army Disciplinary Barracks on Alcatraz Island during World War I, and was a judge advocate and a military instructor
at the Army General Staff School. After retiring he wrote several books, including his family history, entitled: A brief genealogical
and biographical record of Charles Roscoe Howland, brothers and forebears. The collection consists of genealogical notes
compiled by Charles Howland concerning the Howland family, with a small amount of notes on the Thomas Wood family. Also included
is information on General Howland, particularly regarding his service at the United States Army Disciplinary Barracks on Alcatraz
Island.
