Abstract: Henry Dodge was a descendant of one of the oldest families in Cleveland, Ohio, and an employee of Standard Oil of New Jersey. Dodge lived his adult life in Scarsdale, New York. The collection consists of a book of reminiscences for his children. In addition to his own life story, his book provides information on many of his family members, including his wife, Lila McClelland Dodge, his parents, Samuel Douglas Dodge and Jeannette May Groff, and his grandparents, George C. Dodge, Lucy A. Burton Dodge, Henry R. Groff, and Mary A. Sutherland Groff. The book contains references to prominent Clevelanders, including John D. Rockefeller. The collection is valuable as a sketch of the life of Henry Dodge and for the information it contains on the Dodge family and related families. Since the Dodges were a prominent Cleveland family, the material also includes information on the social life of Cleveland's upper class during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dodge's experiences in France during World War I may also be of interest.

Biography of Henry Dodge

Henry Dodge (b. 1883), a native of Cleveland, Ohio, spent most of his adult life employed by the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, a job he began in 1922. He had received a law degree from Yale University in 1908 and had spent time working for various law firms prior to World War I. During the war, he was commissioned as a major. Dodge's family as one of the first families to settle in Cleveland, his great grandfather, Samuel Dodge, having come to Cleveland from Westmoreland, New Hampshire, in 1798. This was just two years after Moses Cleaveland founded the city. Samuel Dodge was a descendant of Richard dodge, who sailed from England to Salem, Massachusetts, about 1638. Henry Dodge lived his adult life in Scarsdale, New york, where he settled after obtaining his job with Standard Oil. In 1958, he wrote a book of reminiscences for his children. In addition to telling his own life story, his book provides information on many of his family members including his wife Lila McClelland Dodge, his parents Samuel Doglas Dodge (1855-1943) and Jeannette May Groff (1859-1950), and his grandparents, George C. Dodge (1813-1883), Lucy Amelia Burton Dodge (d. 1900), Henry Ream Groff (1827-1916), and Mary Amanda Sutherland Groff. The book also contains references to other prominent Clevelanders, including John D. Rockefeller.
