Biography of the Rheuben Courtright Family

The Rheuben Courtright Family traces its origins to the Basque region of Spain. During the 16th Century some members of the family adopted the Protestant religion and moved to the Netherlands to avoid persecution. The family name, most likely Cortes, was changed to Kortryk/Kortright to reflect the Dutch spelling. Starting in the late 17th Century several branches of the family were established in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Over time, the spelling of the family name was changed, becoming Courtright, Cutrite, Cortright and Cartwright.
