Biography of the Anton Zverina Family

The Anton Zverina Family was established in Cleveland, Ohio, by Antonin Zverina (1830-1910) and his wife Kristina (Kletecka) Zverina (1833-1901) who migrated to Cleveland from the town of Cechtice in Bohemia (now The Czech Republic) in 1874. The Zverinas arrived two years after Mrs. Zverina's father, Martin Kletecka, and two of her sisters had already relocated to Cleveland. The Zverinas were accompanied on their trip by their five children, including a son named Anton Zverina (1863-1934). Anton opened a grocery store in the 1880s near the intersection of East 55th Street and Broadway. About 1900, he pioneered the processing of chicory roots as an ingredient in coffee blends and as a coffee substitute. He built a chicory factory at 5308 Blanche Avenue in Cleveland and eventually became known as the "Chicory King." He later added a rye flour mill to his operation and then a Bohemian rye bread factory. Anton Zverina married Rose Mitermiller (1870-1962), a daughter of Andrew Mitermiller, an architect. They had five children. The Zverinas lived first near the East 55th Street and Broadway area, but later moved to 12210 Miles Road.
