Abstract: Daniel J. Marschall was a journalist who specialized in labor and energy issues for the city of Cleveland, Ohio's Division of Economic Development during the Dennis Kucinich administration, 1978-1979. In 1979, he edited the report entitled "The Battle of Cleveland: Public Interest Challenges Corporate Power", which examined the confrontations between Kucinich and the corporate establishment during his administration. The collection consists of reports from various government and public agencies and corporations on Cleveland's economic situation and history, news releases, speeches, editorials, clippings, articles, interviews, theses, and reports collected by Marschall on economic development, default, mayoral recall, municipal light plant, tax abatement, and Dennis Kucinich's career and campaigns, as well as material generated by the Mayor's office including new releases, speeches, reports, and campaign literature, and criticism and commentary from the media. The sources used to compile the report "The Battle of Cleveland" are included.

Biography of Daniel J. Marschall

Daniel J. Marschall, a journalist specializing in labor and energy issues, served as a research coordinator for the Cleveland Division of Economic Development during the administration of Mayor Dennis Kucinich, 1977-1979. In 1979 Marschall edited The Battle of Cleveland: Public Interest Challenges Corporate Power, published by the Ohio Public Interest Campaign (OPIC), a citizens lobby group. This report chronicled the confrontations between Kucinich and the corporate establishment over such issues as default, the municipal light plant, tax abatement, and the recall campaign. The sources used to compile the report are in this collection.

Scope and Content

The Daniel J. Marschall Papers, 1955-1983, (bulk of material 1977-1982) consist of reports from various government and public agencies and corporations on Cleveland's economic situation and history, news releases, speeches, editorials, newspaper clippings, articles, interviews, theses, and reports collected by Marschall on economic development, default, the recall, municipal light, tax abatement, and Dennis Kucinich's career and campaigns, as well as material generated by the Mayor's office including news releases, speeches, reports, and campaign literature, and criticism and commentary from the media.

This collection is useful for the study of the Kucinich mayoral administration, and the complex economic problems that led to Cleveland's default in 1978. The materials also pertain to the Mayor's personality, tactics and strategy, the composition of his administration, and the political and business climate of the city during his mayoral tenure. The material compiled also provides a comprehensive review of Cleveland's economic development up to 1982.

The collection is arranged in three series: Series I: Cleveland Economy and Economic Development; Series II: Mayor Dennis Kucinich, Administration; and Series III: Dennis Kucinich, Career and Background. Each series is arranged chronologically.

Separated Material

Original tapes of interviews, etc., compiled by Antioch College students to prepare the WYSO radio program on Cleveland's default, "On the Banks of the Cuyahoga," have been removed to the audio/visual collection.
