History of the Holy Cross House for Crippled and Invalid Children

The Holy Cross House for Crippled and Invalid Children was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1903 by the Guild of the Holy Cross for Invalids. Administrated by members of the Episcopal Sisterhood of the Transfiguration, the house served economically disadvantaged children of any race or religion, giving them a temporary or permanent home, medical and surgical care, and, by 1912, scholastic and craft instruction. A twelve-man Board of Trustees and sixteen Lady Managers administrated Holy Cross finances and donations, with the Lady Managers taking more direct care of the house and its interests. Holy Cross House moved from 5609 Whittier Avenue to a larger residence at 9014 Cedar Avenue in Cleveland before closing its doors in June 1934.

Scope and Content

The Holy Cross House for Crippled and Invalid Children Records, 1904-1934 consist of minutes and reports of the Board of Managers and Lady Managers, annual reports, correspondence, financial records, publications, and case files of patients' records.

This collection reflects the establishment and administration of the Holy Cross House during its thirty years of existence. These records may be useful to researchers studying Cleveland health care institutions and children's services in the later years of the progressive era. Of special interest are examples of medical terminology, including references to diseases and public health, that reflect changes in medical knowledge over thirty years and offer an excellent comparison between early 1900s and present day pediatric diagnoses and care.
