David Rothenberg (b. 1921) was raised in the Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. During World War II he served in the merchant marine, leaving the service in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant, J.G. He then worked for thirty-eight years as an electrician in Greater-Cleveland. He is married to the former Natalie Covit and lives in University Heights, Ohio.
The David Rothenberg Papers (1917-1988) consist of materials relating to the history of the Jewish community of Collinwood written or compiled by David Rothenberg, including an eight-page essay by Rothenberg (ca. 1988), Collingwood Jewish population data for 1929, a list of Collinwood Jewish residents, including their occupations and addresses, congregational announcements from the Jewish Independent for Adath Jeshurun Congregation (1921-1927) and its successor, Lake Shore Jewish Center (1929-1934), profiles of the lives of several Jews who were raised in Collinwood, a copy of the Articles of Incorporation of Adath Jeshurun Congregation (1920), and photographs of the building that had housed Lake Shore Jewish Center, and of former Collinwood Jewish residents.
This collection is of value to researchers studying neighborhood life in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1920s and 1930s and Jewish neighborhoods in particular. Since most sources concerning Cleveland's Jewish neighborhoods during this period focus upon Glenville or Mt. Pleasant-Kinsman, this collection fills an important gap.
