Abstract: Roderick Boyd Porter served as the Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Archivist (1973-1985) and was active in neighborhood redevelopment and historic preservation in the Greater Cleveland, Ohio, area. Porter also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Western Reserve Historical Society, as a trustee of the Cleveland Area Arts Council, and a member of the Rowfant Club. He was a member of the North Coast Village Steering Committee in the 1980s, which played a key role in the Lexington Village project and revitalization efforts in the Hough area community of Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of planning and development documents, project reports, proposals, correspondence, minutes, memoranda, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and personal notes. The collection pertains to the revitalization of the Hough area, an inner city neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. It illustrates the involvement of urban renewal and re-development organizations such as the William Bingham Foundation, North Coast Village Steering Committee, the Institute of Man and Science, Glenco, and the Hough Area Partners in Progress.

Biography of Roderick Boyd Porter

Roderick Boyd Porter (1947-1993) served as the Cuyahoga County Archivist and was active in neighborhood re-development and historic preservation in Greater Cleveland. Born in Columbus, Ohio, to Robert J. and Corrine Porter, he graduated from John Carroll University with a B.A. in 1969, received an M.A. from the University of Michigan and was a candidate for a Ph. D. in medieval literature at Princeton University. Porter became the Cuyahoga County Archivist in 1973 and served as director of the Cuyahoga County Archives from 1975 to 1985. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Western Reserve Historical Society from 1979 to 1991, serving as chairman of the Friends of the Library from 1978 to 1986; and was a trustee of the Cleveland Area Arts Council and a member of the Rowfant Club. He was also a member of the North Coast Village Steering Committee in the 1980s which played a key role in the Lexington Village project and other revitalization efforts in the Hough community.

Scope and Content

The Roderick Boyd Porter Papers, 1980-1985, consist of planning and development documents, project reports, proposals, correspondence, minutes, memoranda, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and personal notes.

This collection pertains largely to the revitalization of the Hough area, an inner city neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio. It illustrates the involvement of urban renewal and re-development organizations such as the William Bingham Foundation, North Coast Village Steering Committee, the Institute of Man and Science, Glenco, and the Hough Area Partners in Progress. This collection will be of interest to scholars researching inner city re-development in the early 1980s.
