Abstract: The Montefiore Home is a Jewish nursing home for aged and infirm Jews of Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded in 1882 as the Aged and Infirm Israelites Home, was renamed the Sir Moses Montefiore Kesher Home for Aged and Infirm Israelites in 1884, and, in 1923, Montefiore Home. In the 1940s, Montefiore converted from providing residential care to social and psychological rehabilitation, including day care, social workers, a psychiatric unit, and sheltered workshop. An Auxiliary was formed in 1956-57 to help support Montefiore. In 1991 Montefiore, now a skilled nursing facility, moved to a new $22 million, 240-bed complex in Beachwood, Ohio. The collection consists of annual meeting materials, trustee minutes, building expansion plans, new building materials, publications, reports, and journal reprints.

History of Montefiore Home

The Montefiore Home (f. 1882) is a Jewish nursing home located in Beachwood, Ohio. A brief history of this organization from its inception until 1982 is found in Ms 3835 Montefiore Home Records. In 1988, Montefiore Home, then located in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, undertook a $12,200,000 capital campaign to construct a new facility in Beachwood, Ohio. The new building was opened in October 1990 and formally dedicated in November of that year. In addition to long-term care provided to Jewish persons primarily age 65 and over, the new facility offered two new services not previously available under Jewish auspices: short-term care (90 days) for persons recovering from a hospital stay prior to returning to their own homes, and hospice care for terminally ill persons with a prognosis of six months or less.
