Abstract: William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, served in the American Civil War, and practiced law in Canton, Ohio, where he served as prosecuting attorney for Stark County 1869-1871. In 1876, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was Governor of Ohio 1891-1896. First elected President of the United States in 1896, he was reelected in 1900. He was assassinated in September 1901. The collection consists of editors' copies and page proofs of McKinley's speeches as President, as well as an index for the book Speeches and Addresses of William McKinley. This collection also includes a small number of speeches made by McKinley's Executive Cabinet and some speeches he made as a Representative of Ohio to the United States Congress.

Biography of William McKinley

William McKinley (1843-1901) was born in Niles, Ohio, and lived in Ohio until he attended Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. In 1861 he left college and enlisted as a private in the Union Army, serving under Rutherford B. Hayes. At the end of the Civil War McKinley was discharged as a major. He studied law, then practiced law in Canton, Ohio, where he served as Prosecuting Attorney for Stark County from 1869 to 1871. In 1876, McKinley was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Republican. He was a member of the House until 1891, with the exception of the 48th Congress, 1883-1884. In 1891 McKinley was voted out of office as a result of his promotion of a high tariff, known as the McKinley Tariff. He was Governor of Ohio from 1891 to 1896. In November 1896 William McKinley was elected the 25th President of the United States. He was reelected in 1900 and served as President until his assassination in Buffalo, New York, in September 1901. As President, McKinley instituted protectionist tariffs (Dingley Tariff), signed the Gold Standard Act into law, and approved annexation of Hawaii. McKinley also presided over the Spanish-American War which resulted in the acquisition of Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam.


Scope and Content

The William McKinley Papers, Series II (1878-1901), consist of editors' copies and page proofs of McKinley's speeches as President, as well as an index for Speeches and Addresses of William McKinley (New York: Doubleday and McClure, Co., 1900). This collection also includes a small number of speeches made by McKinley's Executive Cabinet and some speeches he made as a Representative of Ohio to the United States Congress.

This collection pertains mostly to national and international political issues between the years 1878 and 1901.

This collection is of value to the McKinley scholar, historians of the late nineteenth century, and students of the United States Presidency.
