Abstract: Theresa Edwards Summons moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1932 to live and work out of the Phillis Wheatley Association residence. She was employed as a maid, servant, and laborer. In 1934, she married Berton Summons. He worked as a bellman, and later as a real estate broker with an office in the Lee-Harvard community of Cleveland. The collection consists of personal letters, correspondence, telegraphs, a booklet, newspaper clippings, and notes.

Biography of Theresa Edwards Summons

Theresa Edwards Summons (1903-1985) was born in Canton, Ohio, and was a graduate of Canton McKinley High School. Her parents were William and Grace Edwards. She moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1932 to live and work out of the Phillis Wheatley Association, a residence organization that provided homes and employment for single African American women. Summons was employed as a maid and servant for several private homes in and around Cleveland from 1932 to 1933, and later worked as a laborer. She met Berton Summons (1907-1992) in 1931 and began a courtship for three years prior to their marriage in 1934. Berton Summons was born in Plain City, Madison County, Ohio. His parents were James Summons and Maude Ellen Calloway. He was a Cleveland Public School graduate. During his courtship with Theresa, Berton Summons worked as a bellman at the Conneaut Lake Hotel Resort in Pennsylvania. He later worked as a real estate broker with an office in the Lee-Harvard community of Cleveland, Ohio.


Scope and Content

The Theresa Edwards Summons Papers, 1921-1958 (1921-1935), consist primarily of personal letters, correspondence, telegraphs, a booklet, newspaper clippings, and notes.

This collection is of value to researchers studying African American life during the Great Depression, particularly in Cleveland, Ohio, and the experiences of a resident of the Phillis Wheatley Association during the early 1930s.
