Biography of Albert G. Jones

Albert Gray Jones (1842-1919), was an American Civil War veteran born in Lake County, Ohio. He first served in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 1861 to 1863. In January 1864 Jones resigned from the 23rd OVI and was appointed, with promotion, to 2nd Lieutenant, 27th United States Colored Troops, a unit primarily composed of Ohio soldiers. Jones served in the 27th USCT from January 1864 until September 1865. He had received two promotions during his term. On September 12, 1864, he was appointed 1st Lieutenant and in 1865 was appointed Assistant Adjutant General.

The 27th United States Colored Troops were mustered in at Camp Delaware, Ohio, on January 16, 1864, and ordered to Annapolis, Maryland, for service with the Army of the Potomac. The 27th were attached to the First Brigade, Fourth Division, Ninth Corps, Army of the Potomac, until September 1864 and then to the Third Division until December. In 1865, the 27th was attached to the First Brigade, First Division, Twenty-fifth Corps, and later to the Third Division, until March 1865. At that time the 27th was attached to the Third Brigade, Third Division, Tenth Corps, Department of North Carolina, until September 1865. It was mustered out on September 12, 1865. The regiment participated in the campaign that captured Fort Fisher and Wilmington, North Carolina. Jones asserts that he received the surrender of Fort Fisher from the Confederate commander.

Albert G. Jones married Mary E. Demming on October 6, 1864, with the Reverend William H. Goodrich of the First Presbyterian Church of Cleveland presiding. After the War, Jones returned to Cleveland. He worked as a laborer, clerk, and "sanitary policeman" or sewer/plumbing inspector. In May of 1870, Jones was appointed Assistant Marshall, Northern District of Ohio, 9th United States Census. He was a charter member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Forest City Post, Number 556, in which he held several positions, including quartermaster.

This collection is of value to researchers studying the Civil War, Ohioans in the war, officers of the United States Colored Troops, history of the 27th USCT, and biographical and genealogical information of Albert G. Jones and Mary Demming Jones. In addition, information on the Grand Army of the Republic Forest City Post 556, and Clevelanders who served in the Civil War is included.
