Abstract: Clare Benedict was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of George Stone Benedict and Clara Woolson Benedict. She was the niece of author Constance Fenimore Woolson. Benedict was an author in her own right, writing books that dealt with family history, biography of Woolson, and general topics. Constance Fenimore Woolson was born in Claremont, New Hampshire, the daughter of Charles Jarvis Woolson and Hannah Pomeroy. She was a niece of James Fenimore Cooper. Woolson and her family moved to Cleveland in 1840. Woolson attended the Cleveland Female Seminary and was a graduate of Madame Chegaray's finishing school in New York City. She later lived in Florida, and then spent the rest of her life in Europe. Woolson published many works of fiction during her lifetime. The collection consists of books, letters, letter fragments, notes, notebooks, photographs, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, bound magazines, poems, essays, genealogies, invitations, programs, a memorial book, tickets, postcards, lithographs, sketches, watercolors, brochures, press notices, reviews, birth records, receipts, a military commission, signatures, a constitution, and a nail. In many cases, authors of books contained in the collection wrote inscriptions to either Clare Benedict or Constance Fenimore Woolson. Included are two books inscribed by Henry James, along with a letter written by him to Benedict. Excerpts of letters, notes, postcards, photographs, and other manuscript material concerning either the author or the subject of a book were placed into each volume, most likely by Clare Benedict. Some of the books and manuscript materials appear to have originally belonged to Constance Fenimore Woolson, and include letters, notes, letter fragments, poems, a poetry notebook, and other items.

Biography of Clare Benedict and Constance Fenimore Woolson

Clare Benedict (1868-1961) was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of George Stone Benedict (1840-1871) and Clara Woolson Benedict (1843-1923). The niece of writer Constance Fenimore Woolson, her mother's sister, Benedict was an author in her own right, not only of general works, but also of several that dealt with family history and biography of her aunt. These include the multi-part volume Appreciations of Voices Out of the Past, Constance Fenimore Woolson, The Benedicts Abroad; the Family Trilogy (1941). Benedict died in Switzerland in 1961.

Constance Fenimore Woolson (1840-1894) was born in Claremont, New Hampshire, the daughter of Charles Jarvis Woolson and Hannah Pomeroy. Hannah Pomeroy was the niece of author James Fenimore Cooper. Woolson and her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1840, where her father established an iron foundry. She attended the Cleveland Female Seminary in the 1850s and was a student of Linda Thayer Guilford. In 1858, she graduated from Madame Chegaray's finishing school in New York City. Her sister, Georgiana Pomeroy Woolson, married Samuel Livingston Mather of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1850. Their son, Samuel Mather (1851-1931) became a close friend and financial advisor to his Aunt Constance. Woolson spent time doing war work during the Civil War, and after the death of her father in 1869, lived with her mother in New York. In 1873, she and her mother moved south, living primarily in Florida until 1879 when her mother died. Woolson lived the rest of her life in Europe where she became a friend and colleague of Henry James.

Woolson published many works popular during her lifetime, including collections of short stories, Castle Nowhere: Lake Country Sketches and Rodman the Keeper: Southern Sketches; many articles and short stories; and five novels, Anne, For the Major, East Angels, Jupiter Lights, and Horace Chase. She died in 1894 in Venice, Italy. Interest in her and her work, which had waned following her death, has greatly increased in recent years. For further biographical information on Woolson, see Constance Fenimore Woolson: The Grief of Artistry (1989) by Cheryl B. Torsney; Critical Essays on Constance Fenimore Woolson (1992) also by Torsney; Constance Fenimore Woolson: Homeward Bound (1995) by Sharon L. Dean; Constance Fenimore Woolson (1963), by Rayburn S. The Clare Benedict Collection, 1796-1961 (1870-1940), consists of books, letters, letter fragments, notes, notebooks, photographs, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, bound magazines, poems, essays, genealogies, invitations, programs, a memorial book, tickets, postcards, lithographs, sketches, watercolors, brochures, press notices, reviews, birth records, receipts, a military commission, signatures, a constitution, and a nail. Most of the manuscript material has been tipped in, glued, or taped into the individual books, which make up the bulk of this collection.
