Biography of John Walsh

John Walsh (1856-1951) was born in Crewe, Liverpool, England, of Irish-born parents. He attended private schools and graduated from St. Paulinus School in Yorkshire in 1874. In 1878, he began to take an active role in Irish affairs, serving as a delegate to the Liverpool Convention which elected Charles Stewart Parnell president of the Confederation of Great Britain. He played rugby and was the captain of the Britannia Football Club.

In October 1880 he married Anna Markey, a daughter of Irish-born parents, and together they emigrated to America, arriving in Cleveland, Ohio, in October 1880. When he first arrived, Mr. Walsh worked in partnership with his brother in a weaving business. Industrialization caused the failure of the business within a few years. Later he taught at Immaculate Conception School in Cleveland, did odd jobs, and worked for eighteen years at the United States Post Office.

During the 1890s, Mr. Walsh organized and was first president of the Cleveland branch of the Catholic Knights of Ohio. In 1895, he became a member of the Parnell Branch of the Irish Land League. Walsh also served as president of the MacNeven Club, a group which was organized in June 1867, chiefly by Irish veterans of the American Civil War, to preserve the Irish traditions and culture in the United States. He also served as the county president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and secretary of the John Mitchell Council of the Irish National Association.

After leaving the post office, he became the assistant to the county treasurer and in 1911 was appointed a bailiff at the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, a position he held at least until his ninety-third birthday in 1949. He and his wife were the parents of seven children.
