Abstract: | The United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland was founded in 1981 in Cleveland, Ohio, to fund organizations that serve African Americans, the poor, and minorities that are underserved in Cleveland's philanthropic and charitable sector. The United Black Fund accumulates and allocates funds to alleviate suffering, poverty and illiteracy. It also seeks to strengthen the tradition of charitable giving among African Americans to promote economic self sufficiency. The collection consists of agendas, annual reports, audit reports, board of trustee minutes, bylaws, correspondence, programs, invitations, financial documents, and newsletters. |

The United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland was founded in 1981 in Cleveland, Ohio, by George W. White to fund organizations that serve African Americans, the poor, and minorities that are underserved in Cleveland's philanthropic and charitable sector. The United Black Fund accumulates and allocates funds to alleviate suffering, poverty and illiteracy. It also seeks to strengthen the tradition of charitable giving among African Americans to promote economic self sufficiency. It also promotes education and wealth-building in the African American community.
United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland, Inc. funds over 80 non-profit agencies annually. These agencies serve thousands of children, families, and seniors. It also provides programming on grantsmanship, workshops, and informal forums to the public free of charge. The United Black Fund also forms alliances with people that share a commitment to informing and educating the community on issues affecting their daily lives.
The United Black Fund seeks to have an impact in three main areas of giving: Workforce Development, Education, and Basic Needs. It specifically funds programs to support people entering the workforce for the first time or after incarceration; early childhood and college mentoring programs; and emergency needs in a crisis situation.
