Scope and Content

The Worthy McClintock and Family Papers, 1862-1864 and undated, consist of approximately twenty-five pieces of correspondence primarily between Worthy and his parents (Joshua and Lucy), but also includes a few letters from family friends and other correspondents.

The bulk of the letters are from Worthy to his family describing his experiences while serving with the 18th Regiment. A few of the letters give accounts of battles and other skirmishes with Confederate troops in graphic detail. The letters from family to Worthy describe their general day-to-day activities including cheese making and farm work. The collection also contains correspondence from a friend of Joshua's, Royal Taylor, in reply to his inquiries about Worthy's whereabouts in the fall of 1864. The last two folders contain correspondence from Mr. Taylor to Rufus Hall in Tennessee and others, most of which includes information about searches at hospitals and make-shift graves. One fragment letter from Sergeant Bell in Tennessee mentions Worthy's personal effects being sent to one of his cousins (Romane?).
