Rabbi Jack Herman (1922-1969) grew up in Brooklyn, New York, attended the Yeshiva of Flatbush, and graduated from the Jewish theological Seminary of America. His first rabbinic position was at Anshe Emeth Synagogue in Youngstown, Ohio. When the former rabbi of Anshe Emeth returned from service in the United States, Army, Herman moved to Beth Israel Synagogue in Warren, Ohio. In 1947 he came to Cleveland, Ohio, as rabbi of Beth Am, community temple, serving until his death in 1969. Rabbi Herman had been an officer for the American Jewish congress, chairman of the Cleveland Zionist youth Commissions, and from 1967 until his death was president of the Cleveland Board of Rabbis. He served as president of the Northern Ohio Region of the Rabbinic Assembly and was a member of its national executive committee. Among his scholarly activities were contributions to periodicals in Hebrew and English and the research and compilation of materials of the history of Cleveland Jewry for the American Jewish History Project and Columbia University.
