Abstract: Laszlo Krausz (1903-1979) and Susan Krausz (1914-2008) were a Jewish couple from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, who were accomplished musicians. Laszlo Krausz was born in Pecs, Hungary in 1903. From an early age he studied violin, travelling to Budapest, Vienna, and Paris to continue his education, until settling in Switzerland in 1929 to study viola. Susan Strauss Krausz was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1914. She completed piano studies at the Musikhochschule of Stuttgart and then moved to Switzerland in 1933. Following their 1935 marriage, Laszlo and Susan performed a series of viola-piano sonatas for Radio Geneva before immigrating to the United States in 1947. The Krausz family initially settled in New York where Laszlo accepted a position at the New York College of Music and played with the Carnegie Hall Pops Orchestra. Laszlo was then offered a position with the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in the fall of 1947. While a member of the Cleveland Orchestra, Laszlo also founded the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra and conducted both the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and the Akron Symphony Orchestra. He also pursued the sketching and painting that would become his full-time passion following his retirement from the orchestra in 1969. Laszlo's art was shown at various galleries, including the Butler Museum of Art. Susan Krausz joined the faculty of the Cleveland Music School Settlement upon her arrival in the city, and was awarded her M.A. in music from Western Reserve University in 1956. She continued to perform and compose while also teaching piano at Case Western Reserve University and in her home. The Krauszs had two sons, Peter, who owned a public relations firm in Israel until his death in 1989, and Michael, who is currently a philosophy professor at Bryn Mawr College. The collection consists of academic records, address books, advertisements, agreements, appointment books, art catalogs, artwork, awards, biographical information, calendars, certificates, charts, codes of conduct, contracts, correspondence, datebooks, degrees, diaries, exhibit commentaries, flyers, genealogical charts, itineraries, letters of recommendation, lists, magazine articles, magazine and newspaper clippings, music compositions, naturalization documents, notebooks, notes, passport documents, posters, press releases, programs, publications, a radio script, a recipe book, registers, regulations, repertoire books, resident alien documentation, resumes, reviews, schedules, scrapbooks, sketchbooks, sketches, speeches, telegrams, travel documents, wills, and writings.

Biography of Laszlo and Susan Krausz

Laszlo Krausz (1903-1979) and Susan Krausz (1914-2008), a Jewish couple who lived in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and were active with Park Synagogue, came to the United States from Geneva, Switzerland with their two sons Peter and Michael, first to New York and then Cleveland in 1947. Laszlo was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra for over 20 years and was an artist and symphony orchestra conductor. Susan Krausz, pianist and composer, taught at the Cleveland Music School Settlement and Case Western Reserve University, and gave private lessons.

Laszlo Krausz was born in Pecs, Hungary, on April 4, 1903 to Simon and Franceska Krausz. He studied violin from an early age and after high school continued to study violin at the Municipal Music School in Pecs. He travelled to Budapest, Vienna and Paris to continue his music studies and performed and studied under many famous teachers. In 1929 he went to Switzerland. While living in Switzerland he switched to the viola from the violin, studied at Basel University and became first solo violist of the "Orchestre de la Suisse Romande" under Ernst Ansermet. He had a distinguished career as violist and conductor of various ensembles in Europe. During this time the status of Jews in Hungary was increasingly precarious. Laszlo was stateless as a Hungarian living in Switzerland during World War II. His parents were exterminated in Auschwitz in 1945. Denied Swiss citizenship--and with the required affidavit guaranteed by American film producer Walter Wanger and actress Joan Bennett--, Krausz and his family were finally able to immigrate to the United States in 1947. The Krausz family became naturalized United States citizens in 1953.

In 1947 when the Krausz family arrived in New York, Laszlo became a member of the New York College of Music faculty and played with the Carnegie Hall Pops Orchestra for a summer season. He was then offered a position with the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell and moved to Cleveland in the fall of 1947. His family followed in 1949.

Susan (Strauss) Krausz was born on November 4, 1914 in Stuttgart, Germany to Moritz and Else Strauss. She began piano lessons at age seven and studied piano at the Musikhochschule (Music College) of Stuttgart, being one of the youngest students ever to receive a diploma. In 1933 she moved to Lausanne, then Geneva Switzerland to continue her piano studies and make a better life for herself than what Jews could expect in Nazi Germany. She studied with Edward Fisher and Dinu Lipatti and played as soloist with numerous orchestras in Switzerland. Susan and Laszlo met in Lausanne, Switzerland during this period and married on August 18, 1935. They performed together over Radio Geneva for a series of viola-piano sonatas which were very successful, and each continued their own musical endeavors as well. Laszlo and Susan had two sons, Peter, born on August 18, 1938 and Michael, born on September 13, 1942.

Once in New York, Susan taught piano at the New York College of Music, performed for various radio stations and concert halls, and continued her piano studies, receiving two piano teaching certificates from the Teachers College of Columbia University. She, along with Peter and Michael, joined Laszlo in Cleveland in 1949.

While a member of the Cleveland Orchestra, Laszlo also founded the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra comprised of members of the Cleveland Orchestra and became conductor of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra in 1953 and the Akron Symphony Orchestra from 1954-1959. He also worked on his art, sketching his colleagues, concert halls, and tour highlights among other things, and received a master's degree in painting from Western Reserve University in 1959. He had numerous one-person shows of his artwork, and taught art classes at Cooper School of Art and Case Institute of Technology. When he retired from the orchestra in 1969 he devoted himself full time to his artwork, eventually staging exhibits in his home gallery in Cleveland Heights, and other venues, including the Butler Museum of Art. Laszlo's art endeavors were varied and included sketches of famous landmarks and holy places in Israel, sketches of his experiences on tour with the Cleveland Orchestra, paintings in honor of Michelangelo, "Hebrew Letters and Symbols of the Holy Land" and "Colors and Symbols", among others. Laszlo died on May 25, 1979 after suffering a heart attack.

When Susan came to Cleveland, she became a member of the faculty of the Cleveland Music School Settlement and continued her piano and composition studies with Leonard Shure and Marcel Dick. She received her Master of Arts Degree in music from Western Reserve University in 1956. She continued to perform and compose and was active in many music associations including the Cleveland Composers Guild of the Fortnightly Musical Club and Mu Phi Epsilon, a national music society from which she received a prize for her composition, Piano Picture Book (published by Kalmus Music Publishers). She became a lecturer at Case Western Reserve University and taught piano there from 1966-1992. She continued to teach piano privately from her home studio until the time of her death in 2008.

The Krauszs' sons, Peter and Michael, were both graduates of Cleveland Heights High School. Peter attended the joint program at Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary. He was active in Zionist activities and immigrated to Israel in 1970 with his family. He founded Peter Krausz Associates, a public relations and communications firm and continued to work on such humanitarian causes as lobbying for refusenik Ida Nudel until his death in 1989.

Michael Krausz, currently Milton C. Nahm Professor of Philosophy at Bryn Mawr College, received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1969. He has been visiting professor at many institutions and is the author and/or editor of sixteen volumes. He is also a recognized artist with thirty-three solo and dual expositions and since 2003 has been active in music as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Great Hall Chamber Orchestra at Bryn Mawr.

Scope and Content

The Laszlo and Susan Krausz Papers, 1903-2008 and undated, consist of academic records, address books, advertisements, agreements, appointment books, art catalogs, artwork, awards, biographical information, calendars, certificates, charts, codes of conduct, contracts, correspondence, datebooks, degrees, diaries, exhibit commentaries, flyers, genealogical charts, itineraries, letters of recommendation, lists, magazine articles, magazine and newspaper clippings, music compositions, naturalization documents, notebooks, notes, passport documents, posters, press releases, programs, publications, a radio script, a recipe book, registers, regulations, repertoire books, resident alien documentation, resumes, reviews, schedules, scrapbooks, sketchbooks, sketches, speeches, telegrams, travel documents, wills, and writings.

This collection is of value to researchers studying immigration to the United States from Europe during the post-World War II era. The Krausz papers will specifically interest those wanting to learn more about the experiences of Jewish immigrants in northeast Ohio, especially Cleveland Heights. The diaries and autobiographical writings of Laszlo Krausz are extremely relevant to this topic and are remarkable for their sheer volume and insightfulness. Laszlo Krausz was a sensitive man who lived in the most senseless of times. What he saw in the kaleidoscope of Europe in his early years impacted the rest of his life. As stateless residents of Switzerland, he and Susan explored various avenues to escape the reach of the Nazis before and during World War II. Susan's diaries and writings should also be consulted on this topic as should the official and legal documents in Series III.

The correspondence in this collection is also noteworthy. The letters of Laszlo's parents to him provide a view into their daily lives in Hungary before they perished in the Holocaust. Laszlo Krausz's correspondence to his parents, however, was destroyed amidst their deportation. Anyone interested in the Jewish experience in Hungary in the World War II era should consult this portion of the collection. Simon and Franceska Krausz's correspondence (in Hungarian) is accompanied by amateur translations which sometimes lack accuracy (Christian terms used where Jewish terms should be, etc.). The researcher should be aware of this and always consult the original letters. This correspondence also contains an occasional letter from other family members such as cousins, uncles, etc. Those interested in emigration to Israel from the United States will find the correspondence between the Krauszes and their oldest son Peter informative. The correspondence could also be used in genealogical research due to its extensiveness and detail.

This collection is also of value to those studying the performing arts, both in Europe and the United States in general, and Cleveland and northeast Ohio more specifically. The records of Lazlo and Susan Krausz contain a wealth of information regarding the Cleveland Orchestra, Akron Symphony Orchestra, and several European orchestras including programs, itineraries, tour information and descriptions (pictorial and written) of some of the members. Anyone interested in piano studies or music education will want to examine Susan's music compositions and notes. The Krauszes were faculty members of the Cleveland Music School Settlement and Susan also taught at Case Western Reserve University as well as privately. The collection also contains information regarding teachers of note including Walter Rehberg, Edward Fisher, and Leonard Shure and famous conductors such as Felix von Weingartner, George Szell, and Ernest Ansermet.

This collection is also of value to those interested in visual art, especially locally. It contains examples of Laszlo's artwork, information on local art galleries from the late 1960s-1970s and art classes that Laszlo took or taught. There is also much documentation relating to Laszlo's efforts to have his works published.
