Abstract: Stanley Garfinkel (1930-1997) was an oral historian, documentarian, and history professor at Kent State University. After college, Garfinkel worked in his family's seven-store chain Garfinkel Shoes. He was appointed office manager of the company in the early 1960s, but was encouraged by his father to pursue his dream of teaching. He obtained a position at Kent State University in 1963 and taught there until his retirement in 1996. Garfinkel had a special interest in oral history. One of Garfinkel's oral history projects was on the garment industry in Cleveland, Ohio. He interviewed several people who worked in or helped shape the garment industry. He then used those interviews to produce a slide show entitled "Rags: 100 Years of the Apparel Industry in Northeast Ohio," and a television documentary entitled "Rags." The collection consists of interview transcripts and scripts.

Biography of Stanley Garfinkel

He obtained a position at Kent State University in 1963 and taught there until his retirement in 1996.

Garfinkel had a special interest in oral history. One of Garfinkel's oral history projects was on the garment industry in Cleveland, Ohio. He interviewed several people who worked in or helped shape the garment industry. He then used those interviews to produce a slide show entitled "Rags: 100 Years of the Apparel Industry in Northeast Ohio," and a television documentary entitled "Rags."


Scope and Content

The Stanley Garfinkel Oral History Collection, 1981-1983 and undated, consists of interview transcripts and scripts.

This collection is of value to researchers studying the history and evolution of the garment industry in Cleveland, Ohio, the development and decline of industry in Cleveland, and relations between labor and management. Of particular note are the first-hand accounts of working conditions, strikes, and unionization. Among those interviewed were leaders in the industry, including Arthur Dery, Louis N. Gross, Frank E. Joseph, David Reinthal, and Maurice Saltzman. The collection also includes an interview with local historian Judah Rubinstein.


Statement of Arrangement

The collection is arranged in two series.
Series I: Transcripts is arranged in original, numerical order, using Garfinkel's numbering system (which includes significant gaps).
An alphabetical list of those interviewed in Series I is included at the end of the finding aid.
Series II: Scripts is arranged alphabetically by document type and then chronologically.
