Young Israel of Greater Cleveland is a Cleveland, Ohio, branch of the Jewish congregation of Young Israel, a Zionist Orthodox organization that has branch synagogues throughout the United States. The National Council of Young Israel was founded in 1912 in New York, New York, by a group of young Jewish Americans in an effort to provide a more easily accessible Orthodox community for the Jewish immigrants of the time. Young Israel is an organization that is managed and led by a lay leadership, and the congregation has its own rabbis. Young Israel is not a children's or youth organization, but a nationwide network of Orthodox synagogues. According to Lloyd Gartner in History of the Jews in Cleveland, Young Israel study groups began emerging in Cleveland in 1917, opening their first building in Cleveland in 1937. The Beachwood, Ohio, chapter of Young Israel was founded in 1989 by Rabbi Yaakov Feitman.
In 1996 David Gottesman, President of the Young Israel of Greater Cleveland, along with several other members of the Orthodox Jewish community, planned a campus which included several buildings, including a girl's high school to be built on Green Road in Beachwood, Ohio. Initially the plan failed to pass, being voted down by the Beachwood City Council. In 1999 the final approval was given by the Beachwood Zoning Committee and City Council for the campus after nearly 4 years of appeals and controversy.
The Young Israel of Greater Cleveland Records, 1948-2001 and undated, consist of advertisements, almanacs, awards, booklets, correspondence, dues cards, lists, minutes, publications, and reports.
This collection is of value to researchers interested in the religious life of the Jewish community in Cleveland, Ohio, especially in the Orthodox community. The collection shows the community's connections to the national and international Jewish communities and also documents its movement throughout the Cleveland suburbs. The records document the move of the congregation to Beachwood, Ohio; the search and installation of new rabbis for the synagogue; and a number of legal disputes in the late 1980s. The collection also includes information about the planning of the Beachwood chapter of the Young Israel of Great Cleveland group, including correspondence between members and materials relating to the controversy regarding the campus. Information about the Fair Bus Law and the Ohio Humane Slaughter Law are also found in the collection.
