Biography of Zelma Watson George

Dr. Zelma Watson George (1903-1994) was born December 8, 1903, the oldest child of Samuel and Lena (Thomas) Watson, in Hearne, Texas. Her parents were both college educated and musically trained, and were both teachers. Samuel Watson soon became a minister in the Baptist church, causing the family to move around the south and mid-western United States during Zelma's childhood. Samuel Watson was also active in the early civil rights movement, and was familiar with several leaders of the day including Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois, and several others. These connections had a critical influence on Zelma.

After threats from the Ku Klux Klan, Mr. Watson accepted a pastor position in Topeka, Kansas, in 1918. Zelma Watson George graduated from high school in Topeka in 1920, where she experienced integrated education for the first time. She was determined to attend the University of Chicago, even though discouraged by her high school counselor.

Zelma did attend the University of Chicago, but was not allowed to live on campus because of her race. Due to the refusal of housing and her father's fear that she was too sheltered to move to Chicago alone, the family went along. Samuel Watson became the pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago.

Zelma graduated in 1924 with a degree in Sociology, having endured discrimination in several of her campus activities, including swim class and choir. Upon graduation she became a caseworker for the Associated Charities of Evanston, Illinois, and then a probation officer in the Juvenile Courts of Chicago. She also continued her interest in music and musical studies, where she received a certificate in organ and church music from Northwestern University, a two year program, and studied voice at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.

Upon the sudden death of her father in 1925, Zelma decided to help her mother with providing for the education of her younger siblings. Postponing her musical and other career ambitions, in 1932 she took a teaching position at Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State University and became Dean of Women there. Her mother was already employed there and served in several positions, working as a dormitory matron until the age of 80.

As her siblings made their way through school, Zelma was able to move on to a new phase of her life. In 1937 she married Baxter Carrol Duke, a pastor, and moved to Los Angeles, California, to establish the Avalon Christian Church and Community Center. She also continued her graduate studies at the University of Southern California, with a study on Negro music and its impact on society. Her marriage ended, but her education went forward. She received a two-year Rockefeller Foundation grant to continue her studies of black music which brought her to New York City and she completed her Master of Arts Degree in personnel administration at New York University in 1943. Her research on black music brought her to Cleveland, Ohio, where she met and eventually married Clayborne George, in 1944. Clayborne George (1888-1970) was a distinguished attorney and member of the Cleveland Civil Service Commission. He was active in local politics and civil rights issues.

Zelma's interest in music continued in Cleveland. She was very successful at Karamu House in Gian-Carlo Menotti's "The Medium" in 1948-1949, which led to her performing the role on Broadway for 13 weeks. She was lauded as one of, if not the first, African Americans to perform in a role not specifically written for an African-American, and received the Merit Award of the National Association of Negro Musicians. She performed in other roles at Karamu and auditioned for other roles on Broadway, but decided to return to Cleveland to be with her husband.

She was also active in international, cultural, and political activities at this time. She earned her Ph.D. in sociology and intercultural relations from New York University in 1954. She became the first African American woman to serve on the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Armed Services (DACOWITS) in 1956, and unsuccessfully ran for Ohio State Representative in 1958.

Through her work on DACOWITS and other conferences with national leaders, she became connected with Congresswoman Francis Payne Bolton, from Ohio's 22nd district. Congresswoman Bolton, learning of Zelma's background, research, and experiences, recommended her for a grant from the State Department's Educational Exchange Program. Zelma was awarded this grant, which took her on a six month tour around the world speaking on African American and Women's issues in the United States. She was lauded by the world press, consulates, embassies, and American government personnel for her work on this tour. Upon her return, she was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as an alternate member of the United States delegation of the United Nations General Assembly in 1960. At this time, several African nations were joining the United Nations, and Zelma took controversial stances. As her time with the U.N. Delegation came to an end, Zelma used these experiences for speeches and lectures she was invited to give for various foundations and organizations.

Dr. George became the Executive Director of the Cleveland Job Corps Center for Women in 1966. The Job Corps Center was operated by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in conjunction with the federal government and helped to train young women in a trade or to receive a high school diploma/GED to help them become employable, independent, and successful. She retired from the Cleveland Job Corps Center in 1974. After her retirement, she continued to give lectures and speeches, teach classes at Cuyahoga Community College, and perform occasionally in musical or dramatic roles.

Zelma Watson George was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio and was a member of several boards and organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Links, Inc., the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Girls Scouts, Karamu House, the Conference of Christians and Jews, the Council on Human Relations, and many others. She received several awards and honorary degrees. She passed away on July 3, 1994 in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
