Biography of the Joseph Buell Family

The Joseph Buell Family were early settlers in Ohio and the Northwest Territory. Joseph Buell (1763-1812) was a soldier in the United States Army and the Ohio Militia, a politician and jurist, and an early settler and prominent citizen in Marietta, Ohio. For more information on Buell, and especially on his role as Major General of the Ohio Militia in the events surrounding Aaron Burr's conspiracy of 1806, the researcher should consult MS 3433 Joseph Buell Papers.

Buell, a native of Connecticut, came to the Ohio frontier as sergeant in the United States Army, primarily stationed at Fort Harmar at the junction of the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers. Prior to his discharge in 1788 he acquired land near North Bend, Ohio, in the Symmes Purchase. Upon his return to Connecticut, he married Siba Hand (?- 1831) in 1789. Shortly thereafter, he returned to Ohio and his land purchase, accompanied by his brother Timothy (1768-1837). However, both men chose to move back upriver to Marietta in 1790, and both became leading citizens in the settlement. Joseph opened a tavern, which proved very successful. He was appointed an associate justice of the Washington County Court of Common Pleas and a ma or general in the Ohio Militia in 1803, and served as an elected state senator from 1803-1805. Timothy was a captain in the militia, serving during the Burr controversy and during the War of 1812. He also served as a county magistrate, a state representative from 1820 to 1822, and sheriff of Washington County. Many of their descendants were equally prominent in the affairs of Marietta and Washington County.
