Biography of the Ford and White Family

The Ella Almira White Ford Family traces its American lineage to Colonial Massachusetts. In subsequent years, various members of the family migrated to the Western Reserve of Ohio where they and their descendants became prominent in various businesses and civic enterprises in the City of Cleveland. One of these descendants, Mrs. Ella White Ford (1883-1952), became interested in the family's history and spent her lifetime compiling genealogical data relating to the Horatio Ford Family and its various branches. In 1952, her data on the White Family was gathered into book form by Emma Boutelle Hawley and published under the title Descendants of Thomas White, Sudbury, Massachusetts, 1638.

the earliest record of the White Family in America dates to 1638 when Thomas White was residing in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Later, he was one of the founders of Sudbury, Massachusetts.

Several members of the White Family performed military service in both the colonial Indian wars and the Revolutionary War. John White (1699-?) served in the French and Indian War. Thomas White (1742-1827) was a lieutenant in the Continental Army.

It was in the American Civil War period that Mrs. Ford's father, Thomas H. White (1836-1914), began the manufacture of sewing machines in Orange, Massachusetts. In 1866 he moved to Cleveland, and in 1876 he founded the White Sewing Machine Company.

An outgrowth of the White Sewing Machine Company was the White Motor Company which was organized in 1915. Rollin H. White, a son of Thomas White, was also involved in the early automotive industry with his own company, the Rolling Motor Company.

The Ford family also traces its American lineage back to early colonial times. Andrew Ford arrived in Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1642 or 1644. Hezekiah Ford (1734-1826) fought in the French and Indian War. Another Hezekiah Ford (1759-1848) fought in the American Revolution.

Cyrus Ford (1790-1864) came to Granville, Ohio, in 1837 and moved to Cleveland in 1841. He served as an elder in the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church from 1843 to 1860. Horatio Clark Ford (1853-1915), a grandson of Cyrus, was President of the Cleveland City Council, founder of the Cleveland Trust Company, builder of the Williamson Building (the city's first skyscraper), and a member and chairman of the board of the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church.

Horatio Ford (1881-1952), the son of Horatio Clark Ford, was raised on the family homestead located at Euclid Avenue and Adelbert Road, the present site of the Allen Memorial Library of Case Western Reserve University. He married Ella White in 1908. They lived in their home, "Whitford," which was located at the corner of Mayfield and Richmond Roads in the village of Lyndhurst, east of Cleveland.

In 1968, Elizabeth Cobb Stewart used this collection for her book The Descendants of Andrew Ford, 1642/44 of Weymouth, Massachusetts.
