History of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States, Inc., Post 14

The Jewish War Veterans is the oldest active veterans society in the United States. Organized on march 15, 1896 as the Hebrew Union Veterans, its major purpose was to promote the patriotic record of American Jews. In 1920, the Hebrew Union Veterans united with a second group, the Jewish Veterans of the War with Spain, to form the Jewish War Veterans.

In Cleveland, Ohio, the Jewish War Veterans Post 14 was organized in April 1919. It was admitted to the national organization in 1925 and has subsequently become a significant force in the Jewish community. Not only has it been heavily involved in lobbying for civil rights and combating anti-semitism, but it has also contributed financially to Jewish institutions, assisted veterans, and sponsored social activities much like other veterans societies. Its members are encouraged to join other veterans organizations.

The structure of the Jewish War Veterans included national, regional, state, county, and local governing bodies. Active ladies auxiliaries carry out a complimentary program. For them, as for the men's groups, publicity and successful community relations are especially important. This is uniformly reflected in Jews War Veterans correspondence and publications.
