Charles Auerbach (1899-1979) was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, attorney, education leader, and Zionest leader. Born in Ukraine, Auerbach came to Cleveland in 1909. He graduated from the old Central High School, earned his undergraduate and law degree from the Western Reserve University, and then studied English literature, economics, and government at Harvard. Charles Auerbach was admitted to the bar in 1922 and practiced law for ten years with Max Goodman. In 1941, the Cleveland Bar Association named Auerbach the trial counsel in the investigation of certain practices in the legal profession at the instigation of the Ohio Supreme Court. He also began a thirty-year teaching career at the John Marshall Law School in 1944.
Though Charles Uaerbach earned much distinction as a lawyer, he was also a noted Jewish scholar, author, teacher, and protagonist of Zionism and Jewish culture. In 1948, he actively campaigned for the United Jewish Appeal in behalf of Palestine/Israel. For fourteen years, Auerbach was chairman of the Jewish Court of Arbitration, working to bring about perpetual care in Jewish cemeteries. He produced a variety of publications. In 1952, he wrote an article in the Western Reserve University Law Journal on the relationship between the Talmud and the common law. It was later reprinted in book form. In 1967, Auerbach was the first layman to have an article published in the Journal of Central Conference of American Rabbis (Reform). This article was a 37-page work on Martin Buber, the Jewish philosopher. However, Auerbach's writing efforts were not restricted to Jewish-related subjects. In 1966, he wrote two articles in the Cleveland Bar Association Journal. Entitled "Time for Change," these articles were critical of the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court system.
The Charles Auerbach Photographs, 1945-1973, consist of portraits and views of Charles Auerbach, his family and friends, and his activities with the United Jewish Appeal and other Jewish organizations. The collection includes 96 black and white photographs that measure 8 x 10 inches and smaller.
