The Thomas Whelpley Prints, 1834, 1868, and undated, consist of approximately 50 prints of four different views of Cleveland, Ohio, as it appeared in 1833. These views were published in 1834 by Thomas Whelpley as engravings by Osborne, the engraver. In 1868 they were republished as lithographs by Sanford and Hayward of Cleveland. In addition to these two editions of the prints, the series was also reproduced as lithographs by J. Archer, sculptor, of Cincinnati, Ohio and these prints are also included.
There are many slight variations in the details between the three series. The most obvious difference, however, is that the 1868 lithographs have two portraits of Thomas Whelpley on the lower border. A variation also occurs within the earlier series. The view, "From the corner of Bank and St. Clair Street Looking East" contains a copyright statement, "Entered according to the act of Congress A. D. 1834 by Thos. Whelpley, in the clerks office of the district Court of the Southern district of New York" directly at the bottom of the image. This statement does not appear on any of the other three views of the 1834 series. It, however, is present in all of the views in the 1868 series. The Archer lithographs are titled "Cleveland, Ohio, as it was in 1832."
The image size of the prints in the 1834 series is 14 3/4 x 9 3/16 inches.
The image size of the prints in the 1868 series is 14 3/4 x 9 1/16 inches.
The image size of the Archer prints is 4 9/16 x 7 5/16 inches.
