Biography of the Marie Remington Wing Family

Biography of Marie Remington Wing

Marie Remington Wing (1885-1982), a Cleveland, Ohio, native and daughter of Federal Judge Francis J. Wing, attended Miss Mittleberger's School in Cleveland before studying at Bryn Mawr College. She returned to Cleveland to work in the Young Women's Christian Association from 1907 to 1922 and began an active public life by campaigning for proportional representation and a new city charter for Cleveland. In 1922 she entered the Cleveland Law School while working as Executive Secretary for the Consumer's League of Ohio. One year later, Wing was elected the first woman member of the Cleveland City Council, serving for two terms before losing the 1927 election. Having been admitted to the Bar of Ohio in 1926, she then established her own private practice in Cleveland while serving as solicitor for the Village of Mentor (1929-1936) where she resided from the late 1920s to her death. In 1936 she was appointed Regional Attorney to the Social Security Board (reorganized into the Federal Security Board in 1939), remaining there until 1953. Through those years Wing developed additional professional credentials, serving on a number of committees in a variety of organizations. Wing's activities were not limited to Cleveland but increasingly encompassed Lake County organizations and causes. She also became involved in the activities of her housemate Dorothy Smith and sister Virginia Wing, working on the establishment of the Mentor Community Fund and serving the Anti-Tuberculosis League, Lake County Office of Economic Opportunity, East End Neighborhood House, and United Appeal.

Biography of the Marie Remington Wing Family

Marie Remington Wing (1885-1982) was the first woman member of the Cleveland City Council, a successful lawyer, and a lifetime social crusader. Wing came from a distinguished Cleveland family, from which she drew her enthusiasm and her sense of social commitment. George Clary Wing (1848-1929), her uncle, was an author and Harvard-educated attorney who worked in several United States government departments before returning to Cleveland in 1884 to join his brother's law practice. This brother was Francis Joseph Wing (1850-1918), Marie's father and a judge in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. He later became a judge in the United States District Court for Northern Ohio, but resigned in 1905. Marie's older sister, Virginia Remington Wing (1881-1951), was, like Marie, a social activist. She began her career with the Red Cross, serving in both Washington and St. Louis. In 1923, she came to Cleveland in order to take a position as the executive secretary of both the Cleveland Anti-Tuberculosis League and of the Cleveland Health Council's Health Education Department. In 1929 and 1933 she added to her responsibilities the secretary-ships of the Brush Foundation and the Sight Saving Council. Marie's longtime companion, Dorothy Smith (ca. 1886-1976) began her career with the YWCA, which she left in 1926 to found an insurance business. During the Second World War, Dorothy re-entered social work as an executive for the East End Neighborhood House, where she remained until 1955. In later years, she and Marie founded and served in many Lake County social service organizations. Marie Wing's niece Stephanie Ralph (1914-1969) was a school psychologist some of whose research was published in nationally-prominent journals, and whose husband Paul Ralph was even better known in the academic world. In 1948, he won an award for his photographs of microscopic organisms.
