Biography of Jack P. Russell

Jack Paul Russell (1915-1979) served the Cleveland, Ohio, community as councilperson from the 16th Ward from 1943-1971. His political tenure included eight years as Democratic majority leader and eight years as council president. Born Paul Ruschak of Hungarian immigrants Stephan and Mary Ruschak, he was raised in Cleveland's Buckeye Road neighborhood where his first political experience came as campaign manager for Joseph Stearns in the 1933 council election. Building up his influence in his home neighborhood by publishing area newspapers (including the Buckeye Press), he entered politics in the late 1930s after changing his name to Jack Paul Russell. It was during this period that he married Irene Magaury and began raising his family of three children. In 1943 he was elected to city council and a year later began his tenure as Democratic majority leader. From 1955-1963 he served as president of city council. Although he lost the council presidency to James V. Stanton, he continued to serve as councilperson for the 16th Ward until 1971. In addition to his political career, he also operated several businesses including the Ohio Fire Protection Systems.
