Abstract: The collection consists of views of activities of the Union Army in South Carolina during the American Civil War. Included are views of Folly Island, Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, Lighthouse Inlet, and Morris Island. The bulk of the material depicts scenes from the siege of Charleston, particularly of Folly and Morris Islands. Included are views of various artillery batteries used and army buildings. The photographs were thought to have been taken by Lt. Philip Haas and Mr. Washington Peale, whose personal histories are unknown. The collection was acquired in 1912 by William P. Palmer for the Western Reserve Historical Society.

Scope and Content

The Haas and Peale Photographs, 1861-1865, consist of views of activities of the Union Army in South Carolina during the Civil War. Included are views of Folly Island, Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, Lighthouse Inlet, and Morris Island. The bulk of the material depicts scenes from the siege of Charleston, particularly of Folly and Morris Islands. Included are views of various artillery batteries used and army buildings. The photographs were thought to have been taken by Lt. Philip Haas and Mr. Washington Peale, whose personal histories are unknown. The collection was acquired in 1912 by William Pendleton Palmer for the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection includes 58 black and white photographs of varying sizes. It also includes 44 black and white glass plate negatives that measure 4.75 x 7.5 inches.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of the American Civil War, particularly the activities of the Union Army in South Carolina. The collection includes scenes of Hilton Head and Beaufort, South Carolina; the blockade and siege of Charleston, South Carolina; and the occupation of St. Augustine, Florida. The bulk of material found in this collection depicts scenes from the seige of Charleston, particularly of Folly and Morris Islands, from which the artillery barrages of Confederate-held Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbor, and Fort Wagner, on the mainland were mounted.

The copy negatives in this collection were generated by Daniel Eldredge, whose extensive collection of Civil War material was purchased in 1912 by William Pendleton Palmer and donated to the Western Reserve Historical Society.
